Lifeguards at the beaches on Tybee Island have been cautious with Hurricane Danielle’s choppy waters and riptides and with Hurricane Earl on it’s way, the seas will be getting worse.
Channel 9 WTVM has reported that “Lifeguards are saying children need to stay close to shore and out of the water because the conditions are much too dangerous.” and that “The waves are coming in a lot harder than usual,” said Tybee Ocean Rescue Lt. Kala Morrison, who spent the day watching out for swimmers.

Today marks the 100th day of the gulf oil spill and and as of now it is capped but their is still massive amounts of oil that need to be skimmed from the Gulf.
Over the course of the last 100 days we have been tracking the gulf oil spill and have identified numerous sources during that time that also offer a tremendous amount of information on the spill. These include:
Green Peace- With a great reputation for helping to protect the environment, Green Peace does it once again with organizing people on the ground to help clean up this disaster. Thank you volunteers!
New Delhi Chronicle- Surprised? I was too but they have been on top of providing their audience with detailed info on the gulf oil spill and the people behind it.
Christian Science Monitor- Great compilation of Gulf Oil Spill news from the government to the environment.
Here are some photos I pulled from the Green Peace US flickr feed that really show you the impact of this disaster:
Record temperatures hit Island Tybee as vacationers flood the beaches. The Heat Index forecasts Tybee Island to reach 105 to 113 degrees, thus recommending that beach goers and residence alike to reduce their amount of exposure to hot temperatures, consume copious amounts of fluids, and pay extra attention to elderly. Before you venture outside, be sure to check for the latest information for the Tybee Heat Advisory.
The Tybee Island police department is warning tourists and locals do be mindful of their belongings while at the beach as they report an increase in theft at the beach this summer which happens to be only 1/2 over.
Your Island Tybee Life Guards and Police Department have staffed up for this summers tourist season.

The Associate Press announced yesterday that instead of issuing $90 tickets to those vacationers that bring glass on to Georgia beaches (a strict no-no) are being given cups to switch their beers over vs. tickets by the Tybee Island Police.
What a great public service. I was a bit dismayed back in May when I heard that Tybee Island increased parking fines just in time for the summer tourism rush.
Paul Wolff, a long time Island Tybee resident has organized “Hands Across the Sand” for June 26th where locals and environmental enthusiasts will join together to help protect the pristine beach and local marine and wildlife on Tybee Island to bring to the forefront the importance of protecting Georgia coast from oil drilling.
According to Wolf: “Studies have already shown that any economic or national security benefits derived from drilling for oil off the Eastern outer continental shelf would be minimal. Tapping into what’s out there wouldn’t significantly lower prices at the pump or reduce our dependence on foreign petroleum. ”
