Channel 9 WTVM has reported that “Lifeguards are saying children need to stay close to shore and out of the water because the conditions are much too dangerous.” and that “The waves are coming in a lot harder than usual,” said Tybee Ocean Rescue Lt. Kala Morrison, who spent the day watching out for swimmers.

Over the course of the last 100 days we have been tracking the gulf oil spill and have identified numerous sources during that time that also offer a tremendous amount of information on the spill.  These include:

• NOLA- “Everything New Orleans” featuring the latest news, photos, videos from the gulf oil spill or better known as the BP Deepwater Horizon drilling disaster.
• Green Peace- With a great reputation for helping to protect the environment, Green Peace does it once again with organizing people on the ground to help clean up this disaster.  Thank you volunteers!
• New Delhi Chronicle- Surprised?  I was too but they have been on top of providing their audience with detailed info on the gulf oil spill and the people behind it.
• Christian Science Monitor- Great compilation of Gulf Oil Spill news from the government to the environment.

For more information on the gulf oil spill, check out BP’s corporate site which now gets 2 million people to it’s site a month to get the latest.  You can also check out BP’s stock ticker to see how the gulf oil spill has sent their stock from $60.00 on April 20th (first day of spill) to a historical low of $27.02 on June 25th, only to see a rebound to $38.00 as of today July 28th.  And lastly you can check out the Wikipedia gulf oil spill coverage for its detail and depth of information.

What a great public service.  I was a bit dismayed back in May when I heard that Tybee Island increased parking fines just in time for the summer tourism rush.

Wondering why glass is not allowed on the beach, well according to Tybee Island Police Officer Andy Capps, “injuries from broken glass occur regularly at the beach, and many of the cuts are serious.”

Signs are posted at every public access to the beach, but police say people get excited when arriving at the beach and don’t read the signs.  Kudos to the Tybee Island police for giving out plastic cups instead of tickets this summer.

According to Wolf: “Studies have already shown that any economic or national security benefits derived from drilling for oil off the Eastern outer continental shelf would be minimal. Tapping into what’s out there wouldn’t significantly lower prices at the pump or reduce our dependence on foreign petroleum. ”

Former Georgia State Senator, and current Gubernatorial candidate Eric Johnson announced last week that he still supports drilling of Georgia’s coast.

Click for more information on Tybee’s participation in “Hands Across the Sand” planned for June 26. The first “Hands Across the Sand” event was held Feb. 13 in Florida where “Thousands of Floridians representing 60 towns and cities and over 90 beaches joined hands to protest” efforts to lift oil drilling bans, according to a press release by Hands Across the Sand.  You can also follow Hands Across the sand on Twitter for up to date information.
